Matt Cohen - "Big Chef " |
|
A fifth generation Savannah native, and graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York Matt's life is steeped in southern tradition. His grandparents relate the story of how Chef Matt, at the tender age of 7, took breakfast orders from family members; cooking eggs and toast to perfection. He was very determined that everything be done just right! This attention to detail, would come in handy, as his cooking career progressed.
Chef Matt's journey took him from Savannah Country Day School to University of Georgia, where for a brief time, he played football. Later he continued his studies in Miami at Florida International University. Moving to NYC, Matt attended and graduated from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), one of the world's leading chef schools.

"Later he went on to work for French Master Chef Maxime Ribera of the famed Maxime’s in New York. Matt also worked for the well-known Chef Pano Karatassos at the Buckhead Life Group Restaurants in Atlanta, including Buckhead Diner and the Atlanta Fish Market. Upon returning to the Savannah area, Matt worked at local favorites including The Pirates’ House and 45 South.
In 2003, Chef Matt then opened his very successful, upscale catering business, servicing Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. With the success of the catering business, Matt realized he needed to have his own place to showcase his unique style of cooking. Thus, in 2006, The New South Café was launched to an amazingly receptive local audience. Finally a southern son had returned home to his roots, sharing all that he has learned on his culinary journey with friends and family. |
