The New South Café’s Cooking for Charity Raises $3,500 for Old Savannah City Mission
At a recent event for charity, The New South Café (TNSC) paired up with Old Savannah City Mission (OSCM) and raised nearly $3,500 to help feed the hungry and shelter the homeless within the Savannah community. Over 35 people attended the local fundraiser which was held at The New South Café.
Chef Matt Cohen, owner of TNSC, launched his Cooking for Charity campaign in 2007 to give back to the many worthy causes in the Savannah area. The New South Café’s 2007 Cooking for Charity featuring Chef Matthew Cohen is a fun way for the community to come together and raise money for a variety of organizations in Savannah that depend largely on charitable donations.
The fundraiser for Old Savannah City Mission was a huge success. Tickets for the event sold for $100 and seventy-five percent of all proceeds were donated to OSCM, Savannah’s Gospel Rescue Mission. Guests received private cooking instruction including proper cooking techniques, how-to’s, and cooking basics from award-winning Chefs Matt Cohen and Scott Gordon. A gourmet lunch, including Chef Matt’s delicious crab cake entree, seasonal salad and signature dessert was served and participants received a certificate of cooking instruction at the completion of the cooking class.
According to Executive Director of Old Savannah City Mission, Reverend Jim Lewis, the summer months often become the "season of the skinny cows" for non-profits such as OSCM.
"Its summer time and the living is not easy. People take well-deserved vacations, gasoline prices are astronomical and some folks have to re-direct their charitable giving,” Lewis said. “The impact staggers small, privately funded non-profits like the Old Savannah City Mission.”
Reverend Lewis says that he sincerely thanks Chef Matt Cohen for his community-mindedness. “Cooking for Charity was an easy and fun way to raise money which will be used to feed and shelter the neediest people in our community,” Lewis said. “Matt is to be commended for making a difference in the lives of the destitute in Savannah.”
