The New South Café Rolls Out New Dinner Menu

The New South Café offers comfort food gourmet style, matching your appetite for a new culinary experience with your hunger for the authentic food of the south. Chef Matt serves up a sophisticated southern menu along with a fun ambience and an artsy feel in his quaint and hip restaurant located on Skidaway Road.
Offering a young and fresh perspective on old southern favorites, Matt prides himself in breaking the stigma commonly placed on southern style food. “Who says southern food can’t be sophisticated?” said Matt. “I am taking traditional southern food and giving it back in a clean, updated way.”
With menu items such as Hush Puppy Crusted Fried Catfish Fingers, served up with sweet onion fritters and squash casserole or Cumin Crusted Salmon, seared and paired with sweet potato hash and an orange sour cream reduction, Chef Matt demonstrates that traditional southern cuisine can in fact be gourmet.
A fifth generation Savannah native, Chef Matt Cohen is a culinary expert who has worked in big name restaurants throughout New York and Atlanta. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, Matt trained at one of the top rated culinary schools in the world and went on to work for French Master Chef
Maxime Ribera of the famed Maxime’s in New York, in restaurants throughout the city. Matt also worked for the well known Chef Pano Karatassos at the Buckhead Life Group Restaurants in Atlanta, including Buckhead Diner and the Atlanta Fish Market. Upon returning to the Savannah area, Matt worked at The Pirates’ House and 45 South.
Matt opened The New South Café in 2006 with friend and fellow CIA graduate, Scott Gordon. Chef Scott worked in Florida for the world famous Chef Norman Van Aken, founder of a visionary way of cooking known as “New World Cuisine,” for many years. After rising to the top of Florida’s restaurant industry, Scott moved to Savannah to join Matt at Professional Chef Services, an upscale catering business servicing Georgia,
South Carolina and Florida, which Matt started in 2003.
After experiencing great success with their professional catering service, Chefs Matt and Scott decided to launch The New South Café, realizing a long time dream. They started slow, offering lunch only, wanting to really master the nuances of their style and cuisine. In just a matter of months the restaurant became one of the most popular eateries in the city. Meeting the great demand of their customers, The New South Café is now open for dinner.
